Howell and Mitchell movement for 4 tables
4 tables seat 8 pairs. The Howell runs 7 rounds and every pair meets every other pair once; the Mitchell runs 3 rounds with N-S pairs staying put.
Howell, 4 tables
Pair 8 stays N-S at table 1; everyone else moves. 7 rounds of 4 boards (28 in all). 7 board sets for 4 tables means 3 sets rest on a side table each round; the guide cards say where each set goes next.
Mitchell, 4 tables
With 4 tables (an even number) this is a skip Mitchell: after round 2 the E-W pairs move up two tables instead of one, so nobody meets the same boards twice. It runs 3 rounds and each N-S pair misses one E-W pair. Two winners: one N-S, one E-W. 3 rounds of 8 boards (32 in all).
N-S pairs stay put. Pair numbers are N-S v E-W. After round 2, E-W pairs skip one table.
Which one to play with 4 tables
At 4 tables most home games and small clubs play the Howell: everyone meets everyone and there is one winner. The even-table Mitchell needs a skip halfway, which is easy to miss; the guide cards spell out each move. Pairs arriving one short? Tick "One pair short" in the movement planner and one position becomes a sit-out.
Want different boards per round, or to score the session from the travellers? Open the planner: it keeps the same movement and adds matchpoint scoring.
